Julian Fameliaris, the newly-crowned 2023 Mobil 1 V8 Supercars Champion, experienced two contrasting days over the past weekend competing in the season’s final round at Zwartkops Raceway, Pretoria.
Fameliaris, backed by Lube-Net, showcased his skills with a solid performance during Friday’s practice sessions, matched only by outgoing and six-time defending champion Mackie Adlem. Bringing his pace and form into the qualifying session, the Johannesburg driver secured pole position after a closely-fought session on Saturday morning.
Having wrapped up the championship at the previous round, it is worth noting that Fameliaris has been in top form this season, which marks his best performance since joining the championship a few years ago. Fameliaris had shown early promise, but previous seasons were marred by reliability and mechanical issues.
The opening race saw a dual between the only two drivers to have won the championship in the last seven years, with Adlem pushing Fameliaris to the finish. Fameliaris added another win to the seven he recorded throughout the 2023 season with the victory.
From a top-four inverted grid, the Chevrolet Corvette driver of Greek descent would make a quick start and be part of a four-car train over the opening laps. After Wilford’s retirement, Fameliasris inherited third before a safety car halted further racing. The race resumed with two laps remaining, only for Fameliaris to suffer a mechanical issue and retire. In the overall classification, Fameliaris finished fourth overall.
“Not how I wanted our weekend to end,” said Fameliaris. “We had great pace throughout the weekend and a great dice with Mackie in Race 1. Everything was set up for another, but I felt something was wrong as we restarted the second race. It’s unfortunate, but it’s racing. The Lube-Net Corvette has been fantastic all season. The team has been phenomenal, giving me a fast and reliable car all year. Thanks to them, Gavin Wilkins Racing, Franco Di Matteo and all the guys in the paddock. To everyone who supported and encouraged me, thank you. We hope to defend this title next season. Lastly, I wish Mackie Adlem all the best in the next chapter of his life. He has been a phenomenal champion, and he’ll definitely be missed next season.”
Fameliaris and Mobil 1 V8 Supercars would like to acknowledge and thank African Group Lubricants for making the 2023 season possible.
